Field Notes / reading

Building a useful reading list

Collect fewer links and give each one a purpose.

Save with a reason

When you bookmark an article, add a few words explaining why you want to return. A question, project name or concrete task is more helpful than a broad category. If there is no reason, it may be better to read the page now and let it go.

Keep sources with notes

A short note in your own words helps distinguish an idea from a quotation. Include the author, title and link beside the note. For facts that change, record when you read the source and check it again before relying on it later.

Review the queue

Set aside a brief weekly reading session. Remove links that no longer interest you and move useful notes into the project they support. A reading list should help you think, rather than become another collection that needs constant maintenance.
