Understanding your home network
A small diagram makes troubleshooting simpler.
Identify the pieces
The modem connects to the provider, the router directs traffic, and an access point provides wireless coverage. Sometimes all three functions live in one device. Write down which cable goes where and label power adapters before moving equipment.
Improve placement first
Put wireless equipment in an open location, away from thick walls and large metal surfaces. A central position often matters more than a complicated setting. Test from the places where you actually use devices, rather than only beside the router.
Change one thing at a time
When a connection becomes unreliable, compare a wired device with a wireless one. Note the time, affected applications and whether other devices behave the same way. Make one change, repeat the same check, and keep the result. Several simultaneous changes make causes harder to identify.
